The Unified Nomad App

Story

Background:

Founded in 2015, Nomad Health has been working in the healthcare staffing space serving as an online platform/middleman to place nurses in jobs. Nomad takes a cut of the profit on each successful placement of a nurse.

Up until October 2022, Nomad Health provided only one mobile app that helped travel nurses find & apply to jobs. However, this was not a native app. In fact, it was a mobile web experience that was wrapped inside an app and then shipped to the App Store for user consumption. This app did not provide a smooth and satisfying experience due to the inaccessible design system elements and the unsuccessful attempt at cramming a large amount of information into such small screens.

In October 2022, Nomad released a second app, Nomad Timekeeper, that helped users log their timecards and submit timesheets. The release of the second app has created an identity crisis for the Nomad brand–which had already been lost in a vast sea of competitors. The mismatch in experiences between the two mobile apps has made the applying processes even rockier for Nomad’s travel nurses.

A new unified app is needed to provide Nomad users a better, easier, and smoother experience.

Challenges:

  • Lack of branding and strategy around what features are needed
  • Web teams have not thought about the native mobile experience, and therefore, need to be made aware of that experience
  • Increasing traffic to the mobile experience
  • Lack of company wide OKRs that mobile metrics don’t measure well against (Job views vs. Contract Extensions)
  • Combining two separate apps that are for completely different purposes: one for finding & applying to jobs; the other for time cards at work

Roles

  • Lead/sole visual designer, lead/sole animator
  • Visually audited Nomad’s old mobile applications: Nomad and Timekeeper
  • Conducted user research and prototypes testing
  • Defined the design system: typography, colors, iconography, etc.
  • Established a visually appealing mobile experience while maintaining a cohesive brand story
  • Produced in-app animations that provide moments of delight

The Unified Nomad App

An abbreviated overview

The goal of this initiative is to combine the two Nomad mobile apps. The first one—Nomad original app—helps medical professionals find their travel assignments. The second app—Nomad Timekeeper—allows Nomad users to log their time and submit time cards. By combining the two apps, Nomad seeks to provide its users a new unified and smooth experience.

Process

We look into the current visuals of the two apps and define a new visual language that:

  • provides users an accessible experience.
  • provides a modern look and appealing aesthetics
  • abides by the most up-to-date Nomad style guide, does not stray away from the visual language that Nomad users have familiarized with.

We worked together to seek the most visual appealing creative decisions.

After 6 months, we have finalized the process and established a solid foundation for the future of Nomad mobile experience.

Animations

In-app animations and Nav Bar interaction aim to provide Nomad users moments of delight. These are small moments but successfully elevate and add more to the newly updated mobile experience.
